Static vs dynamic QR codes: which should you use?

By manxlr · · 6 min read

Search for “free QR code generator” and you'll find dozens of sites that all look the same. Underneath, they make one of two very different things: static or dynamic QR codes. Picking the wrong one is how restaurants end up with hundreds of printed table codes that suddenly open an “upgrade your plan” page.

Static QR codes

A static QR code stores your content directly in the pattern. If you encode https://example.com/menu, that exact address is in the black and white squares. A phone decodes it and opens the link — nothing else is involved.

  • Never expires. There is no service to shut down or subscription to lapse.
  • Private. No third party sees who scans, when, or where.
  • Free. Any honest generator — including ours — makes them at no cost.
  • Can't be edited after printing. The content is baked in.

Dynamic QR codes

A dynamic code stores a short link to the provider's server — something like qr.provider.com/a8Xk2. When scanned, their server looks up where to send the visitor and redirects them.

  • Editable. You can change the destination without reprinting.
  • Scan analytics. The provider counts scans, devices and rough locations.
  • Dependent on the provider. If you stop paying, or they go out of business, the code breaks.
  • Less private. Every scan passes through someone else's server.

The “free dynamic QR code” trap

Many generators default to dynamic codes and advertise them as free. The catch arrives later: after a 7- or 14-day trial, or after a scan limit, the redirect is switched off or replaced with an ad or a paywall. Your printed flyers, packaging and signs all point to their server, so you have little choice but to pay.

Quick test: scan the code with your phone and look at the address it shows before opening. If it's the generator's domain rather than yours, it's dynamic.

Get “editable” without the lock-in

You can get the main benefit of dynamic codes with a static one: encode a URL on your own domain(for example yourcafe.com/menu) and change what lives at that address whenever you like. If you need scan counts, add UTM parameters (?utm_source=table-tent) and read them in your own analytics.

QR Brand only makes static codes — deliberately. Make one with the generator, or place it straight onto your design with the image editor.
